Surfing for treasures at high speed Established in 2006, Eggbox Studios www.eggboxstudios.co.uk has built a successful digital illustration and animation company providing 3D visualisations and computer generated imagery to a range of customers from small, independent businesses to big, international corporations. Steve Bjorck, founder and Director of Eggbox Studios explains how he has been able to build a home-based company with a worldwide client base thanks to high speed broadband provided by freedom2surf, one of UK's leading internet service providers: "If it wasn't for the great service and speed offered by freedom2surf it is unlikely that I would be able to provide the same level of service to my customers. Small businesses like ours, providing services such as new media and design is dependent on high speed, reliable broadband to send large files to other locations. My business would not be possible without a superfast connection. "Unfortunately, the average connection speed in this area is below 1Mbit/s but with my freedom2surf connection I am able to get 1.6Mbit/s which is a lot more than average. The alternative would be to relocate the business to dedicated premises within the town or even another city entirely which would result in much higher running costs." It has opened up an entirely new marked transforming his home-based office into a global business: "Over the past years we have forged new business relationships with people who we previously could not have done business with because they live on the other side of the globe. I now have a great portfolio of well-know international brands including ESPN, Halliburton, SAN Corporation and Reebok to name a few. "I am currently working with an Australian diving company to produce illustrations of sunken ships which is really interesting. Thanks to high speed broadband I am able to take on this project, from start to finish, without even meeting the customer face-to-face. All the work is done from my home office here in Lowestoft." Steve also collaborates with other studios remotely and hires specialist freelancers from various countries: "I'm able to contract the right person for the job on a per-project basis rather than being reliant on the artists available locally or trying to maintain the level of work needed for a full-time employee," Steve explains, "It's another way of ensuring that my clients get great value by only paying for what is essential, something that wouldn't be possible without a reliable broadband service. "My best known work in the UK is for the recent Toilet Duck TV commercial in which I produced all of the 3d models used in the set as well as the product and packaging. I worked from my home studio in Lowestoft for another studio based 200 miles away in Bath with all assets transferred via FTP through my freedom2surf connection." Even though Steve rarely meets his customers in person he does emphasise the importance of "doing business the old fashioned way": "I find that it makes a big difference to business relationships, especially internationally, if you can talk directly to the client rather than relying solely on emails. "I am a freedom2talk customer as part of my broadband package which has reduced my telephone costs considerably making it a lot cheaper to call customers both locally and internationally," Steve says, "As a consequence, I can offer my clients a very high level of service which I am sure has contributed to the success of my business." Steve, who had been freelancing part time for a number of years, had long dreamt of starting his own business from home however it wasn't until a few years ago that he finally gave it ago. "My full-time job was starting to look unstable as the gaps between projects became longer and longer, whilst my freelance work was taking up more of my time. Eventually I made the decision to jump with both feet, knowing that I had to make a go of it or at least try." "I am happy to say that it has been a very good decision in more ways than one. Working from home can be very convenient for certain things like deliveries and taking breaks in the garden. For me it's the perfect solution. Thanks to my freedom2surf connection I can offer the same level of service as any other studio online without the overheads of a city based office. Those savings can then be passed on to my clients." Steve is also complimentary of freedom2surf's customer support service; not that he has had much call for it. "On the very rare occasions I've needed support, the level of technical and customer service has been excellent".
